I’ve been busy making throw blankets using appliqued granny squares lately.  I love these little blankets and I love making them out of granny squares!

The throw blankets are just the perfect size to snuggle up on the couch on chilly winter nights.  And making them using granny squares are super simple.  I love projects that use granny squares because I find that making granny squares are easy and portable; so much easier than carting around a big heavy blanket to work on!   The appliques add that special touch to these blankets too!

Today I’m sharing the Stars & Hearts Throw Blanket I made using 2 types of solid granny squares.  I just think the solid background looks so much nicer than the traditional granny squares that have gaps in them.

I used Navy and Denim blue, White, and Red yarn to make this throw blanket.  I think it gives it that folksy patriotic look.  I used a combination of free patterns to make this throw and joined them with a zipper stitch and just edged them with 3 rounds of single crochet stitches.

The first Solid Granny Square Pattern I used was from Sarah Maker.  Click here for the free pattern! This square has absolutely no gaps between stitches and at the corners.

The second one I used was from Si Nanay Madel.  Click here for the free pattern!  This square has a 2 chain gap at each corner but no gaps anywhere else.

I used the heart pattern from Golden Lucy Crafts.  Click here for the free pattern!

And for the stars I used the pattern from B Hooked Crochet.  Click here for the free pattern!

And here’s a video by Alpaca Direct to show you how to make a zipper join!

You can make this throw any size you want by adjusting the number of squares you make.

If you plan on making this throw please send me photos of your finished project!
