As many of you know by now I’m really into Subway Art.  I love this technique which is also called Typography.  It’s basically taking words, any words, and arranging them in a pleasing way.  The words can be part of a theme, the words of a poem, the same word in different languages, pretty much anything you want.  It’s super easy and super fun!  You can use this technique on just about anything from cards to serving ware, canvas, and even fabric.  It is very versatile!

Friends Subway ArtThis month I used it on wooden frames I picked up at Walmart’s craft department for $1.11.  My theme is Friends.  I wanted to make one for my dear friends and picture frames are a great gift.  So here is my Friends Subway Art Frame, I made a bunch of them.  I’ve already given a few to my friends for their birthdays, the others I’ll save for Christmas.

For my Friends Subway Art frames I arranged the word “friend” in different languages.  I actually made 2 types of frames, rectangle and square.  I loved the way they turned out and I’m so excited to share my template with you!

First I designed the template in Cricut Design Space and cut out the stencil on my Cricut Explore Air.  But don’t worry if you don’t have a cutting machine, you can cut out the stencil with a craft knife or scissors.

Then I painted my frames with Folkart Black Chalkboard Paint and let it dry overnight.

Then I placed the stencil over the frame and “wrote” in the words using a white chalk bistro marker.

That’s it!  Real easy!

Here’s the template for the stencils, click on the picture to download it for free!

To make your own stencil click on the picture you want to download.  Save it on to your desk top, makes it easy to find.

If you’re using a cutting machine upload it to the app your machine uses.  You can resize it if needed, then cut with your machine.

If you don’t have a cutting machine no worries.  Save the download on your desk top and upload it to an image editor like Photoshop or Picmonkey.com, a free online photo editor.  Resize the template to fit your frame.  Print out the template on card stock.  Cut out the letters using a sharp craft knife.  Voila!  You’re stencil is ready for use!

You can make this frame in any color you want, just use different craft paint for the background and a different color marker.  You can even use paint to stencil if you prefer.  What ever you decide to do have fun!  Your best friends will love it!
