Minion

Thanks to the popular Despicable Me movies this summer’s Minions movie those silly yellow critters are really popular with kids and adults.

I made these cute Minion hats as part of  my twin grandchildren’s Halloween costumes this year.  I posted them on Facebook and actually have friends who want adult versions.

I used  Christins from My Sweet Potato 3  found on Ravelry.  It has the pattern for basic hat patterns from Newborn to Adult.  I changed up the colors, added a border, and added crochet appliques for the eyes and bow and embroidered the mouths.

It’s really quick and easy to make these hats, I’m sure the Minion lovers in your life would love one.
Here’s what I did. (instructions for eyes and outer eyes are given for different size hats and for both 1 or 2 eye Minions, just follow directions and fasten off at the Round indicated)

Bow:

Using Hook size F with pink yarn chain 9

Row 1:  Starting at 2nd chain from hook hdc in eac ch (8)

Row 2:  Turn, ch 1, hdc in each st (8)

Row 3-10:  Repeat row 2.  Fasten off.

You will have a rectangle.  Wind pink yarn around the middle of your rectangle pulling it into a bow shape.  Wind at least 10 times then knot securely at the back, leave 2 tails for attaching

Assembling and finishing:

1.  With Right sides facing you place inner eye into outer eye.  Align tails with each other.  Stitch inner eye to outer eye all the way around, knot and trim tail off weaving any excess yarn behind the eye.  If using more than one eye repeat this with the other eye.

2.  Place eye or eyes on the front of the hat.  Position it eye so that the black stripe is in the middle of the eye.  Sew on.  Weave ends in to the inside of the hat.  Repeat if you are using 2 eyes.

3.  Cut 4-5 strands of yarn at least 4″ long.  Loop each strand to the top of the had around the circle.  When you’re happy with the positioning knot each strand, trim evenly.

4.  If you’re using a bow gather yarn “hair” and tie the bow at the base.

5.  With black yarn embroider the mouth with a back stitch or running stitch.  Begin just below the stripe on one side of the eye or eye, work down curving to run across to the middle of the hat just above the trim.  Knot and weave in ends to the inside of the hat.
