Halloween is behind us, fall is definitely in the air.  This means that the holidays are just around the corner.  It’s a good time to put summer away and get the house ready for upcoming festivities.

This year our family did a lot of traveling, in fact we just got home from a 3 weeks vacation in Europe.   All this globetrotting took its toll on our normally organized home.  It’s time to put summer away and things in place before I begin preparations for the last 2 months of the year.

I can’t believe how much stuff we accumulated in just a few short months!  Not only do I have summer toys to put away, I’ve got a bunch of souvenir and travel gear to deal with too.  It’s hard to know where to begin, so I do what I normally do when things are so disorganized, pick a room and just get to work.

Here are a few tips to help you get your house ready for the busy months ahead.  Roll up your sleeves and pick a room!

Gather all the pool and beach toys; store those you want to keep in labeled bins, toss broken ones, and donate those that you don’t want but are too good to toss.

Clean and store grills and outdoor furniture if you won’t be able to use them during the cold winter.  Here’s a video tutorial from Weber with tips on cleaning your grill!

Clean out closets and drawers.  Get rid of outgrown summer clothes by tossing, donating, or selling them. (you might try posting them on tykemart.com and online market place to buy and sell kids stuff).  Make room for bulky winter clothing and footwear.

Clean out and organize the pantry and kitchen.  Get rid of expired food and put away any spring and summer themed dishes, cups, etc.  Things you probably won’t use until next year if ever, like those left over paper goods from your Fourth of July cook-out or those must have refillable drink cups you got at a theme park.

Store suitcases and carry on totes you used for vacations, unless you’ve got more travel plans soon.

Find places for your souvenirs and pictures from your summer trips.

Put away summer decor like wind chimes, lawn decor, etc.

Winterize your garden and get it ready for cold weather.

Once you’ve put summer away it’s time to clean!

Clean out air vents and Fall Cleaningchange filters.  This saves energy and keeps the air you breath clean.  It’s specially important for families with allergies.
