Being a grandparent is challenging in its own unique way. You want to be the best grandparent possible, and so, you need to find a way to look after yourself. Your grandchildren will want to run around and generally, wear you out physically and mentally. As such we have got to think about ways to keep ourselves in good shape in every capacity. So what can we do to provide a helping hand for our grandchildren, and ourselves?
Check your senses
A visit to an audiology clinic for hearing tests needs to be part of your yearly schedule. But if we want to be fighting there fit many different ways that we can look after yourself. It’s not just glasses, but it’s things like hearing aids, and generally making things a bit easier for us. As we get older, these little problems can tend to chip away at us and threaten to isolate us somewhat. This is especially true with something like hearing loss, so instead, think about finding yourself in that way. Your senses are a terrible thing to waste.
A healthy diet as a foundation
It’s a cliche but having a healthy diet is crucial that we need to find ways to enjoy our diet. It’s not just eating healthy all the time, especially when we have grandchildren that like candy on occasion. That means we have got to find a good way for us to reap the benefits of a healthy diet while also indulging in a sweet treat now and again! There is no point in eating rabbit food for the rest of our days because it will make us miserable, but we can find parts of our lives that require a little fine-tuning. Granted, the right diet is subjective, especially these days, but cutting back on alcohol and not overloading yourself in sugar is a simple method. And also, the benefits of the Mediterranean diet have been shown to work wonders for those in later years.
Looking after your mind
A mind is a terrible thing to waste, and you want to enjoy being a grandparent, and while you can take an omega-3 supplement, and consume the right quantity of vitamins, it’s about keeping your mind nimble. To an extent your grandchildren could do this for you! But, if you have concerns about your brain abilities declining, there are numerous brain tricks to help improve your memory. It’s about using the right tools, not just thinking that your brain is of a certain ability. In fact, because of neuroplasticity, and the research undertaken into this, we can make significant changes to our brain regardless of how old we are! It’s not about cognitive decline, but it’s about finding ways to exercise your brain. You can do brain training, but if you really want to keep that muscle going, learning a new language or an instrument are the best ways.
To be the best grandparent possible, you don’t have to be superman or superwoman, it’s about being the best version of you as possible. Your grandchildren love you, and it’s just about staying true to who you are but giving yourself a little helping hand to ensure that you are firing on all cylinders.
